ART BASEL HONG KONG UNVAIL PROLOGUE BY FREDRIKSON STALLARDMay 29, 2014 12:55 pm
During this weeks Art Basel Hong Kong, Fredrikson Stallard will unveil “Prologue”. The four meter high piece, created with Swarovski, is an iconic symbol and monumental statement in raw patinated steel and over 8000 gold coloured Swarovski crystals creating an immense crystalline lens. Simple in its mimicry of the sun, and yet complex in its endless nuances, the imposing lens changes with the altering daylight conditions and the artists control the refraction of the coloured crystal through the painterly use of light, curating the surrounding landscape with movement and projected light.
Prologue is sited in the courtyard of the heritage site of the former Police Married Quarters, a new landmark of design in this ever changing vibrant metropolis. The use of raw steel, and the supporting of the piece by two large industrial construction beams, which are all patinated and allowed to slowly age and react to their environment over time, are testament to the constant flux of its urban situation. The use of golden crystals is loaded with an emotional primeval optimism that spans both eastern and western cultural perceptions. This together with the choice of the circle, the ring, the end and beginning, a cycle of infinite potential, creates an uplifting and truly international piece.
Prologue opens to the public from 13th – 18th May (11am – 8pm) At the PMQ, 35 Aberdeen Street, Hong Kong.
